LPAM Radio Clatterbridge 1386 Khz

“The new LPAM will be based at Clatterbridge Hospital, Clatterbridge Road, Wirral. CH63 4JY. Founded in 1952, Radio Clatterbridge says it is one of the oldest hospital radio stations in the world. The web site http://www.radioclatterbridge.co.uk makes no mention of 1386 Khz yet suggesting that the LPAM is not yet on air. The installation is being carried out by Radica so it could get out well when it launches. If you are in the area, please let us know if you can hear it.”

Merseyland Alternative Radio (MAR) raided

This statement has appeared in the British DX Club Journal, ‘Communication’

“Sorry to all of our faithful listeners for the lack of any AM transmissions from late afternoon onwards on Saturday 14th May, but unfortunately one of the MAR transmitter locations (on 1314 AM) was raided by Ofcom and a lot of expensive equipment was seized. As a precaution our other AM transmitter location (on 1395 AM) was switched off. For the rest of the weekend we continued on the web only via our streams. For at least the next couple of weekends we will probably be on via our web streams only. So please understand this, MAR hasn’t gone away and programmes will continue and hopefully we will be back on the AM band very soon. It’s just that once you lose a good transmitter location they are very hard to replace and there aren’t that many volunteers!

MAR would like to thank all of its regular listeners and please let it be known that your support is most appreciated. As we keep saying ‘your texts and emails are our wages, we don’t get paid for doing any of this1 and indeed it costs a small fortune to run MAR, so please keep on listening and please keep supporting one of the last few remaining traditional old style AM land based pirates in the UK! Thank you.

It looks like one of the local commercial outfits (or possibly a certain training outfit?) has been complaining again. It seems that when local radio is not doing very well, they need someone to blame for it and the pirates are the perfect excuse with the alleged interference they cause.

The commercial stations are being swallowed up by conglomerates and usually end up playing standard music packages which are dictated by the owners. Dune FM (Southport) and Central Radio (Preston) are a perfect example of this as they have merged, with shows coming from Southport, but they separate out the jingles and some commercials for each station. Personality presenters have generally been dropped by the ILR stations in favor of non-descript people who just do the weather and possibly a few back announcements in between the play listed packages. Very boring!

Central Radio Preston Saved

Negotiations are thought to be underway for the purchase of Lancashire’s Central Radio by an un-named individual or company, just hours before the station was due to be closed by owners UTV Radio.

Details of the sale are yet to be finalised, and a statement from UTV is expected once a deal has been reached, possibly as early as next week.

UTV Media announced last week they were closing the station on Christmas Eve, without giving reason for the sudden decision. The station has only been broadcasting for 15 months, having won a competitive battle to win the licence two years earlier.

Commenting on announcement last week,, Calum Macaulay, Director of Local Radio for UTV Media, said: “We won the licence against strong competition, but unfortunately had to launch the station in the middle of the worst recession in memory. We have been looking closely at the station’s viability and unfortunately given the economic climate we have taken the difficult decision to close the station.”

The station is continuing to broadcast as normal for the time being.

Radio Jackie North Tribute Weekend

Radio Jackie North did a tribute broadcast this weekend (14-15 November 2009) in memory of it’s founder, the late Rick Dane.

Frequencies were 1386 AM, 105.00 FM (Via MAR) and 100.8 (Via Central Radio)

Freeview Problems (Granada Region United Kindom)

On November 4th the Granada region of the UK switched of BBC2 on Analogue and Freeview viewers were required to rescan their channels.

Since then I have been getting Welsh channels mixed in amongst my normal Winter Hill channels.

Has anyone else had these problems?

MAR – Merseyland Alternative Radio. Last weekend we celebrated our 30th Anniversary broadcast and to continue with these celebrations we plan to replay the whole of our broadcast this weekend on Saturday 31st October, right through until late on Sunday night, the 1st November. The frequency to find us on is 1143 KHz AM. So if you missed it last weekend, you now have a 2nd chance to hear all that great music once again! As mentioned above we will be on 1143 KHz AM, which is very near our old frequency of 1125 KHz AM, 266 metres medium wave (which we used from 1979 to 1981). For various technical reasons, which we won’t go into here, we won’t be using our original 1125 AM frequency (though it was tested). However, nostalgists of the original MAR need not worry, as 1143 AM is not too far away from that original 1125 AM frequency. So it’ll be just like the old days! Please tune in and let us know if you enjoy listening to MAR by either emailing or texting in. A man has been banned from every roof top in London after pleading guilty to
installing illegal pirate radio equipment on a tower block in Camden.

Working with Camden Council and the police, Ofcom successfully prosecuted
Kieran O’Sullivan who received an antisocial behaviour order (ASBO).

O’Sullivan also received a suspended 18 week custodial sentence, a three
month curfew, a £1,200 fine and had his radio equipment seized.

This followed complaints from residents about pirate radio equipment being
fixed to roof tops on the Chalcots estate in Belsize.
